Emissions

Document ammonia and odour – hour by hour, all year

When abatement technology has to be sized and its effect proven, brochure figures are not enough. StaldVent simulates emissions under real operating conditions – and has supplied the calculation basis for Danish practice for nearly two decades.

The context

Why the documentation demand is growing

Emission-based permitting

In Denmark – and increasingly across Europe – livestock permits are granted on documented emissions rather than head counts. Ammonia must be calculated; odour is assessed against neighbours.

Technology documentation

Air cleaners, partial cleaning and exhaust strategies must be sized correctly, and the supplier is professionally responsible for the design. Verifiable calculations protect everyone involved.

Rising expectations

Authorities, appeal boards and neighbours ask for evidence. Calculations that can be checked have become a competitive edge for consultants and technology suppliers alike.

The emission module

What StaldVent calculates

  • Ammonia production in the building, depending on animal category, weight and floor system

  • Ammonia concentration and emission – hour by hour, with the actual ventilation rate

  • Odour concentration and emission

  • Cleaning efficiency of chemical and biological air cleaners from efficiency curves

  • Partial cleaning: the effect when only part of the exhaust air is cleaned – including control strategy

  • Central exhaust with partial-flow cleaning: overall efficiency, pressure loss and power use

  • Working-environment index from CO2 and NH3 concentrations

The credibility

The calculation basis behind official practice

When the Danish guidelines for the effect of partial air cleaning were prepared (Grøn Viden no. 47, Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences, 2007), the calculations came from StaldVent’s emission module. Those are the curves practice still refers to – and StaldVent is the tool when the task goes beyond standard assumptions: other cleaning efficiencies, specific control strategies or central exhaust systems.

Straight talk: No authority certifies calculation software as such – but StaldVent has been used and recognised by universities, consultants and technology suppliers for three decades, and its models are published in the international literature. That is documentation that can be verified.

Typical tasks

When do you calculate in StaldVent?

Air cleaner documentation

Verify the annual effect of a chemical or biological cleaner at the chosen control strategy – also when operation deviates from the standard curves’ assumptions.

Partial cleaning and central exhaust

Calculate how large a partial flow must be cleaned to meet the requirement – and what it costs in pressure loss and electricity.

The permit case

Attach a verifiable emission calculation to the application when the authority questions the technology’s effect under real conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Authorities do not approve calculation software. StaldVent is a recognised professional tool whose models are published and provided the basis for the official Danish partial-cleaning guidelines – which is precisely the point: the calculations can be verified.

StaldVent does not replace national application systems, but supplies the technical documentation behind them: sizing of the technology, cleaning efficiency, operating hours and power use.

The emission models cover pig and poultry houses, with and without air cleaning.
